How to Care for Hardwood Flooring

At Elite we do more than carpet cleaning and repair! We help our neighbors with almost all of their flooring, including hardwood. We can certainly help you refresh your hardwood flooring when it becomes scuffed and dull, but in the meantime, here are a few tips for keeping your hardwood flooring in great shape for as long as possible.

Regular Cleaning

Sweep or vacuum your hardwood floors regularly to remove dirt, dust, and debris. Avoid using vacuums with a beater bar, as they can scratch the surface. You can also use a damp mop or a microfiber cloth to clean up spills and sticky spots. However, be careful not to use excessive water, as it can damage the wood.

Prevent Scratches

Place mats or rugs at entryways and high-traffic areas to trap dirt and prevent scratches from abrasive particles. Use felt pads or furniture coasters under the legs of furniture to protect the floor from scratches when moving or rearranging furniture.

Avoid Moisture

Hardwood floors are susceptible to moisture damage. Wipe up spills immediately to prevent water from seeping into the wood and causing warping or staining. Avoid using wet mops or excessive water when cleaning. Use a humidifier in dry seasons to maintain the recommended humidity level of 35-55% to prevent the wood from drying out and shrinking.

Minimize Sun Exposure

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade and discolor hardwood floors over time. Use curtains, blinds, or UV-resistant window films to protect the floor from excessive sunlight. You can also rearrange furniture and area rugs periodically to ensure even aging of the wood.

Regular Maintenance

Depending on the wear and tear, periodically clean and polish your hardwood floors to maintain their appearance. Follow the recommendations provided by the manufacturer or flooring professional for the best cleaning and maintenance practices specific to your type of hardwood flooring.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals

When cleaning your hardwood floors, avoid using harsh chemicals, ammonia-based cleaners, or abrasive cleaners that can damage the finish. Instead, opt for pH-neutral or hardwood floor-specific cleaners recommended by the manufacturer.

Take Precautions

To prevent scratches and dents, avoid wearing high heels or walking on hardwood floors with sports cleats or shoes with sharp objects stuck to the soles.

Hardwood flooring is a tough and enduring flooring material. If you clean them regularly and give them periodic buffs and polishes, they will endure for many generations.
